A Flood of Gratitude from Katrina Survivors

Financial donations from the public and from Goodwills around the world helped the Goodwills affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita last year. In some cases, the Goodwills used the funds to restore operations so people could get back to their jobs, in others, to support programs that would help people find jobs and begin to restore their lives. Some people were given funds to help them get back on their feet. For many, life is still a struggle, but their gratitude is abundant. Below are excerpts of just a few of the thank you letters sent.

You will never begin to imagine how it feels to know that there are strangers who care about you during the toughest time in your life. Last year, my son attended four different schools. His school which is 127 years old has lost so much and is rebuilding. I have to purchase not only normal school supplies and uniforms but also textbooks that are normally supplied by the school. A portion of this check will go to defray those costs. Your prayers are still needed for New Orleans. It is still a struggle. However, my family is very appreciative.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Leslie

My family and I lost everything in hurricane Katrina. I want to thank you for helping us get back on our feet. The help came on time, with the kids starting back to school and trying to get a permanent home to live in, things have been tight. Thank you for thinking about us and supporting us in our time of need.

Sincerely, Tony

Thank you for helping me and my two daughters. You helped me with a job and you helped me with money for me and my family.

Katrina was a very difficult ordeal for my family and me; but it is the generosity and caring of people like you that have made it bearable.

Sincerely, Joan (Kenner, LA)

It was very hard to come back to my hometown where nothing is the same. When your family and friends are scattered across the U.S. and neighborhoods are still in disarray, debris still fill front lawns, your elders are dying off more rapidly and still, there’s the uncertainty of this Hurricane season. It is just great to know that the Goodwill family cares and we here in New Orleans are not alone.

Sincerely, Joan (Kenner, LA)

It places joy and warmth in my heart each time I think of what the Goodwill family has demonstrated to us here in New Orleans. I can never say thanks enough to all of you. I’m truly grateful.

Sincerely, Carol (Metairie, LA)
